20 solar workers traveled to Nepal to provide solar power to the protectors of Chitwan National Park and to work with women-led clean energy enterprises serving the energy poor.
THE MISSION
A global solar worker effort
2 teams of 10 solar workers from across our global offices delivered on the promise of Solar for Universal Need by building on the work of our partners, Empowered By Light and Empower Generation, which focused on emergency disaster relief after the devastating 2015 earthquake.
In this second phase, we will installed 3 solar systems for the protectors of Chitwan National Park and worked with women entrepreneurs addressing energy poverty with solar power.

Sponsored and launched 2 women solar entrepreneurs, providing them with technical training and support to establish and grow their own clean energy businesses through our partner Empower Generation.

ENDANGERED SPECIES PROTECTION
Where Tigers & Elephans Roam


Installed off-grid solar at a ranger station
to power critical equipment for anti-poaching units charged with protecting endangered species in Chitwan National Park & installed 2 observation towers in Chitwan National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site and home to endangered single-horned Asiatic rinoceros and Bengal Tiger.

Alyssa Newman
Executive Director

Alyssa brings nearly 20 years of experience in the energy and environmental sector. She has worked with and for several major solar manufacturers and system integrators, energy efficiency organizations, global nonprofits, and humanitarian leaders. She launched SunPower’s sustainability efforts in 2008, including the SunPower Foundation, where she managed more than $5 million in global energy programs and over 1MW of donated solar power technology. Most recently, she led the Rebuild With Sun campaign to bring solar technology to areas of Nepal devastated by a major earthquake.


Masters Human Rights (University of Denver), BA Anthropology (Columbia University). After fighting human trafficking and modern slavery for over five years, Anya decided to try a market-based approach to gender and development. Her experience includes Founder and Associate Director of the Human Trafficking Clinic and a Princeton-in-Asia fellow in Malaysia.
